Initial Salary Schedule Placement

Maximum initial placement is Step 6 on the appropriate column. Credit may be given for prior full-time teaching, instructional support services, and related work experience up to five (5) steps, allowing placement at Step 6. One (1) year of step credit is earned for each two (2) years of full-time related work experience, up to ten (10) years. A mix of teaching and related work experience may be considered. Administration may approve placement above Step 6 when necessary to hire qualified applicants.

Doctoral Stipend

The doctoral stipend applies to earned (not honorary) degrees from institutions recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation or those listed by the U.S. Department of Education, Division of Eligibility and Agency Evaluation (International Accrediting Association list).

Column Movement Units

  1. Units must be job-related and preapproved by the SPA Committee and applicable Vice President.
  2. Other experiences may count toward unit value with prior SPA Committee and Vice President approval.
  3. See SPA Committee guidelines for submission.
  4. Twenty-four (24) units are required for column movement.
  5. Excess units beyond column requirements count toward the 24 units needed for the next column.

Column and Step Requirements

A: Placement of academic instructors and qualifying vocational instructors (initial placement).
B: Placement of vocational instructors only—programs designated annually by the Board of Trustees.

Column I (Unit Equivalent – 136)

  • A: B.A. degree + 12 semester units, or valid California community college credential / meets MQs.
  • B: HS diploma + 6–10 years related work experience + 16–64 semester units, or A.A. degree + 4–5 years related work experience + 16–28 semester units.

Column II (Unit Equivalent – 160)

  • A: M.A. degree; or B.A. + 36 semester units (including M.A.).
  • B: A.A. + 4–7 years related work experience + 16–52 semester units, or B.A. + 2–3 years related work experience + 0–12 semester units.

Column III (Unit Equivalent – 184)

  • A: M.A. + 24 semester units; or B.A. + 60 semester units (including M.A.).
  • B: A.A. + 4–7 years related work experience + 40–76 semester units, or B.A. + 2–4 years related work experience + 12–36 semester units, or M.A. + 2 years related work experience + 0 semester units.

Column IV (Unit Equivalent – 208)

  • A: M.A. + 48 semester units; or B.A. + 84 semester units (including M.A.).
  • B: B.A. + 2–5 years related work experience + 24–60 semester units (with M.A. equivalent), or M.A. + 2–3 years related work experience + 12–24 semester units.

*M.A. degree equivalent refers to a planned, coordinated program related to the instructor’s teaching area, determined by the Chief Instruction Officer, instructional dean, and instructor.
