Online Classes

Are you looking for an online class? You can find one by selecting "online classes" as the location in search for classes

If you don't see a specific online course listed in the schedule, please contact academic counseling or the department directly for questions about your major.

Butte also offers full online degrees. You can find these by searching for "available online” on the program pages or looking at our online degrees page.

Resources for Online Classes

Asynchronous do not have any scheduled meetings. If you don’t see a note or times listed in the schedule, you will not be asked to meet at any specific times. Be sure to check the notes when you register to see if you will need to meet online at any specific times

Synchronous classes meet online at specific times. These will have dates and times listed as “online” for the location.

Hybrid classes have both on-campus meetings and an asynchronous online component. These will have dates and times listed with an on-campus location.

All Butte College online courses are delivered through the Canvas Learning Management System. It’s available online and has the app for your phone (Android or iOS)


Passport to Canvas is a free online workshop that shows you everything you need to know about using Canvas in your class(es).

Log in on the first day of class (Monday). To stay enrolled in the class (and not be dropped as a “no show”) you will need to complete certain tasks that your instructor will explain to you. This information should be on the class homepage, in an announcement, or sent as an email by the first day of class.

Be proactive. Reach out to your instructor when you have questions or concerns. We are here to help you!

Technology requirements will vary for each class. The class syllabus should identify these. Reach out to your instructor if you have questions about what you’ll need for your class. All online classes will require: access to a computer, your email, and the internet.

Have a backup plan. You can find computer labs on Butte’s campuses and at your local library. The Butte College Library has a limited number of laptops & Wi-Fi hotspots for check out. Please email bclibcirc@butte.edu or call 530-879-4017 to ask about availability.

After classes have started, you can also use the Help menu in the Global Navigation menu. Canvas Support can help with:

  • The Center for Academic Success (CAS) offers tutoring
  • NetTutor offers live tutoring in many subjects, including math, and a writing center for submitting papers for tutoring review. NetTutor offers free online
