Classified Senate
The Butte College Classified Senate represents classified professionals across the Butte-Glenn Community College District in participatory governance. Recognized by the Butte College Board of Trustees, we advocate for classified professionals on non-bargaining issues, support an inclusive and caring campus community, and help strengthen staff leadership, visibility, morale, and student success.
Role of the Senate
The Classified Senate serves as the participatory governance body for classified professionals at Butte College. The Senate helps share information, gather input, and represent classified professional perspectives on non-bargaining issues that affect the campus community.
The Senate works with campus groups, local communities, and the California Community Colleges Classified Senate to support the roles, rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of classified professionals. This includes encouraging participation in shared governance and contributing to the mission of the California Community Colleges.
Responsibilities of the Classified Senate include:
- Participating in Butte College’s shared governance structure.
- Representing the needs, concerns, and viewpoints of classified professionals on non-bargaining issues.
- Providing a centralized way to share information between classified professionals and the broader college community.
- Selecting classified professional representatives to serve on governance and non-hiring college committees.
- Promoting the professionalism of classified professionals and helping ensure their work is recognized and valued.
- Supporting democratic participation in college governance.
- Encouraging leadership development and professional growth among classified professionals.
- Promoting activities that build classified professionals’ skills, productivity, and professional standards.
- Representing classified professional interests in the development of college policy and practice, including staff development, facilities and services, relationships with students and faculty, and classified representation in budget discussions.
The Classified Senate does not address collective bargaining or hiring committee matters. Those responsibilities are separate from the Senate’s role and belong to the California School Employees Association Chapter 511. This includes contract issues, wages, benefits, grievances, disciplinary procedures, and hiring committee appointments. For more information about the difference between the Classified Senate, CSEA, and the District, please review the Delineation of Duties.

Caring Campus
Caring Campus is a proven, evidence-based approach to improving student success by building stronger personal connections between students and the campus community. Classified professionals help lead this work by teaching, promoting, and modeling the “High-5” Behavioral Commitments: wearing identification such as name tags or shirts, making eye contact through the 10-foot rule, building interdepartmental awareness, offering warm hand-offs, and creating warm welcomes during the first week of classes and beyond.
High-5 Commitments
- Identification: Wear name tags or Caring Campus shirts so students and colleagues can easily identify employees. This helps with directions, connection, and emergency situations.
- Eye Contact: Use the 10-foot rule by recognizing people nearby. Smile, say hello, wave, or approach students who may look lost or need help.
- Interdepartmental Awareness: Stay familiar with campus resources by visiting departments, connecting with colleagues, and asking questions so you can better serve students.
- Warm Hand-offs: Help students connect with the right campus resource. When possible, walk them to the location, call ahead, or email the department and copy the student.
- Warm Welcomes: Help students feel welcome during the first two weeks of the semester and beyond. Greet students, table at Ask Me booths, offer big smiles, and be ready to help.
