Articulation

Articulation is how courses transfer for the purposes of admission, transferable units, general education, or major preparation.

Here you will find resources on transfer admission and graduation requirements for universities, articulation agreements with other college campuses, and information on Common Course Numbering.

University Admission Requirements

Completion of Cal-GETC or another GE transfer pattern is not a guarantee of admission. See below for minimum admission criteria to be considered as an upper-division transfer student at each university system.

The UC system requires that you complete a 7 course pattern to meet minimum admission requirements:

  • Two transferable courses in English composition (UC-E)
  • One transferable course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning (UC-M)
  • Four transferable college courses chosen from at least two of the following subject areas:
    • arts and humanities (UC-H)
    • social and behavioral sciences (UC-B)
    • physical and biological sciences (UC-S)

Completion of Cal-GETC does not guarantee completion of the 7-course pattern. See a counselor and consult assist.org to ensure completion of these UC Transfer Admission Eligibility courses.

The CSU system has the following minimum admission requirements to be considered an upper-division transfer:

  • at least 60 transferrable semester units (at least 30 GE)
  • 2.0 minimum GPA
  • in good standing at last college/university attended
  • completion of C- or better in the Golden Four areas (Cal-GETC Areas 1A, 1B, 1C, and 2)

Colleges and universities outside of the UC and CSU system may each have their own unique requirements to be considered for transfer. It is important to research these requirements on the website for each private or out-of-state college/university campus you wish to apply to and work with a counselor in selecting your classes.

Some campuses may honor Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs) and Cal-GETC completion towards their lower-division requirements.

See the California Private College is Possible website to start researching private college admission requirements.

American History and Institutions (AI)

Students who graduate from a CSU are required to complete courses that fulfill their U.S. History, Constitution, and American Ideals (AI) requirements. Students who take these courses while at Butte College may double count them with a general education  (if applicable). These can be found on assist.org by searching transferable courses from Butte College that fulfill the CSU AI requirement. If you take one U.S. History and one Government class as shown below, all three AI requirements will be fulfilled.

U.S. History – ECON 20, HIST C1001 (was HIST 8), HIST 18, HIST 26
Government – POLS C1000 (was POS 2), POS 12 (Note: POS 12 is for CSU only and does not transfer to UC)

Chico State will also honor HIST C1002 (was HIST 10) for U.S. History due to established articulation with their HIST 130 United States History course. Other CSUs may honor HIST C1002 by articulation. Consult a counselor to confirm course applicability to an individual CSU campus.

Chico State U.S. Diversity and Global Cultures

If you are transferring to Chico State, you will be required to complete one U.S. Diversity and one Global Cultures course. There are many Butte College classes that may fulfill these requirements, and also double count for GE and/or major requirements.

See the full list of Butte College courses that fulfill the U.S. Diversity and Global Cultures requirements on assist.org.

California Community Colleges have adopted a statewide numbering system through the Common Course Numbering project (AB 1111) in an attempt to simplify credit transfer between institutions. This system is intended to provide a standardized set of subjects and course numbers across all California Community Colleges.

This will ensure that commonly numbered courses will be easily identifiable on a student's transcript, regardless of the college offering them. The first six of these courses were implemented statewide in Fall 2025. See Common Course Numbering Crosswalks for course changes by academic year.
