Transfer Requirements and Considerations
Unique considerations for transfer in the 2025–26 academic year are noted below. Since Cal-GETC is not required for admission to a University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU), each system’s general admission requirements are outlined. Individual campus and major requirements may vary.
Please work with a counselor to ensure your education plan meets all necessary criteria.
CSU Transfer Admission Requirements
To meet California State University (CSU) transfer requirements, students must have all the following:
- At least 60 CSU-transferable units (Butte College courses numbered 1–99 or C1000–C1999) with a minimum 2.0 GPA
- At least 30 of the transferable units must be general education level
- Completion of CSU GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C, and 2 with a grade of C– or better in each
CSU application and admission information is available at www.calstate.edu/apply.
Additional CSU Considerations
Each CSU campus has its own general education (GE) pattern. Students transferring without full GE certification will be held to the local standards of that campus for GE, major, and graduation requirements. In some cases, previously completed GE courses may still be accepted upon transfer even if they do not meet Cal-GETC criteria. Students should consult a counselor and/or their intended CSU campus for details.
UC Transfer Admission Requirements
To be eligible for University of California (UC) transfer admission, students must:
- Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of UC-transferable college credit with a minimum 2.4 GPA (2.8 for nonresidents)
- Complete the UC’s seven-course pattern with a grade of C or better in each, selected from the UC Transfer Admission Eligibility course list (see www.assist.org):
- Two UC-transferable college courses in English Composition (3 semester or 4–5 quarter units each)
- One UC-transferable college course in Mathematical Concepts/Quantitative Reasoning (3 semester or 4–5 quarter units)
- Four UC-transferable college courses from at least two of the following areas: Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Physical and Biological Sciences (3 semester or 4–5 quarter units each)
- Take no more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units as Pass/No Pass unless the originating institution uses only Pass/No Pass grading
Additional UC Considerations
Campus and major GPA requirements may exceed the 2.4 minimum. Students are encouraged to complete the recommended major preparation courses listed on www.assist.org to be competitive.
Students uncertain about which UC campus they will attend can follow the UC Transfer Pathways, which recommend major preparation courses for the most popular majors.
Most UC campuses require proficiency in a Language Other Than English (LOTE) to graduate. This is typically met with two years of the same language in high school or two semesters at Butte College. Check with your counselor and the UC campus you are applying to for details.
Students previously enrolled at a UC campus who wish to return should contact that campus’s Registrar’s Office to learn about readmission or reinstatement requirements. Application and admission information is available at admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply-now.
Common Course Numbering (CCN)
To simplify transfer between California institutions, community colleges have adopted a statewide Common Course Numbering system (AB 1111). This system standardizes course numbers across colleges. The first eight courses will be implemented in Fall 2025. Additional courses will follow in coming years.
