Every semester, no exceptions: You must submit a Certification Request Form after registering for classes. Without it, we cannot certify your enrollment with the VA.

Continuing student checklist

You're staying in the same program with no changes to your educational goal.

This is the simplest path — just two steps required each semester.

Register for classes

Enroll only in courses that count toward your educational goal. Taking unrelated classes can affect your benefits.

Courses outside your program may not be certified

Submit your Certification Request Form

Submit this form after registering. This is what triggers us to certify your enrollment with the VA each semester.

Keep in mind

Adding or dropping classes after certification may affect your monthly housing allowance. Notify us right away if your schedule changes.
If your plans change mid-semester, see the "Changing my plan" checklist.

Changing your educational plan

You're switching your major, degree, certificate, or educational goal.

You must update your education plan with a counselor before we can certify courses under your new goal.

Meet with the academic counselor

Schedule an appointment to create an updated Veterans Education Plan that reflects your new goal.

Submit your updated education plan to us

Bring or email your new Veterans Education Plan to Veterans Services. We need this on file before certifying you under the new program.

Register for classes & submit your Certification Request Form

Once your new plan is on file, register for classes and submit the form to trigger your enrollment certification.

Returning student checklist (1+ year)

You haven't attended Butte College in one year or more.

You must reapply to Butte College before you can register for classes or receive benefits.

If you attended another college while away, request official transcripts be sent to Butte College Admissions and Records.

If it's been more than three years since you last used VA benefits at Butte College, select Returning (3+ years) above for your full checklist — you'll need to resubmit some additional paperwork.

You haven't used VA education benefits at Butte College in three or more years.

In addition to reapplying to the college, you'll need to resubmit key paperwork before we can certify your benefits.

Please review the descriptions below and submit only the forms that apply to your situation. Not all students are required to complete every form.

All forms can be completed digitally. Download the form, fill it out, save it, and submit the completed form using your Butte College student email. Using your student email helps us verify your identity and process your request more efficiently.

If you are unsure which forms you need to submit, please contact Veterans Services at (530) 895-2566 or veterans@butte.edu before sending your documents.

Before You Submit Forms

  • Submit only the forms that apply to your situation.
  • Complete all forms before submitting them.
  • Save completed forms before attaching them to your email.
  • Use your Butte College student email when sending documents.
  • Include your student ID number in your email.


The Certification Request Form is used to request certification of your enrollment with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Students using VA education benefits must submit this form each semester after registering for classes.

Certification Request Form


The Intake Form is used to establish or update your Veterans Services file. It helps our office determine which documents are needed to process your VA education benefits and ensures we have accurate information on file.

When should I use this form?
Submit when using VA education benefits at Butte College for the first time or when requested by Veterans Services.

The Student Responsibility Form outlines the policies, procedures, and requirements for receiving VA education benefits at Butte College. By signing this form, you acknowledge your responsibilities and understand how enrollment changes may affect your benefits.

When should I use this form?
Submit when establishing or updating your Veterans Services file.

Student Responsibility Form


The Transcript Obligation Form identifies all colleges and universities you have previously attended. This form helps Veterans Services track outstanding transcript requirements and ensure compliance with VA regulations.

When should I use this form?
Submit if you have attended another college or university.

Transcript Obligation Form


Use the Add/Drop Form if you make changes to your schedule after your enrollment has been certified. This includes adding, dropping, withdrawing from, or changing classes. Prompt notification helps prevent delays, overpayments, or interruptions to your VA benefits.

When should I use this form?
Submit whenever you make schedule changes after certification.
