Work-Experience Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Work-Study programs pay some or all of a student's wages, while WEX allows students to earn academic credit for on-the-job learning.
Yes, your wages may be subsidized by the Work-Study program (if you qualify) while you also earn units for on-the-job learning.
Your instructor will usually be an instructor in the discipline (department) in which you are studying. Their role will be to guide you in the production of valid learning objectives and to meet with your supervisor at the end of the semester for an evaluation, at which time they will issue you a grade. We will provide a list of WEX instructors when you come in to pick up your Work Experience packet.
This is an open-entry, open-exit course, which means you can add or drop this course at any time. These courses are offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.
Students enrolled in either paid or unpaid WEX programs can count hours worked upon receipt of their completed work experience packet (no sooner than the first day of the semester).
The last day to count hours for WEX is the day before the 1st day of the following semester (for example, if the fall semester begins August 21, the last day to count hours for the summer semester is August 20).
You will not receive credit for the work you have completed. This would be the same as doing the coursework associated with a particular class, but not adding the class until the end of the semester. It's too late!
If you fail to turn in your timesheet by the due date that was given to you when you enrolled in Work Experience, you will be given an "I/F" for incomplete. You will then have 6 months to take the appropriate action in order to correct your grade. At the end of the 6 months, if you have not turned in your timesheet, the "I/F" will become an "F", which will then be irreversible.
Yes, the type of job you have, as well as whether or not you will be paid, will determine which program you need to enroll in. If you would like some assistance in obtaining a position, contact a Career Specialist.
Yes, Financial Aid will pay for WEX as long as you are registered for WEX before the Financial Aid census date (the third week of the semester).
Work-Study FAQ
The Butte College Career Center offers three types of Work-Study that assist students in obtaining paid employment by subsidizing their wages: Federal Work-Study, ButteWORKs, and EOPS Work-Study.
- Federal Work-Study allows students to work on campus or for nonprofit or government agencies, providing community service. This program pays 100% of a student's wages but is limited to the minimum wage. (Students may work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and up to 39 hours per week during regular academic breaks.
- ButteWORKs Work-Study allows students to work on or off campus in a field related to their major. This program reimburses the employer a percentage of the student's wages. Reimbursement rates are up to 75% for both for-profit and non-profit organizations.
- EOPS Work-Study allows EOPS students to work on campus and earn up to $1800 per semester. Students must be referred by an EOPS counselor.
Bring your Financial Aid Offer Letter to the Career Center near the end of July or later, and our staff will determine if you qualify and assist you in finding an appropriate job. (Awards are given for the entire school year, and Federal Work-Study funds are usually depleted quickly.)
Yes! If you have applied for Financial Aid but were denied, you are more than likely not eligible for Federal Work-Study; however, you may still benefit from the job board, resume critiques, mock interviews, and a variety of other individual services that are offered by our department.
Yes, a majority of students working on campus are not involved in the Work-Study programs.
