Graduation and Commencement

Congratulations! You’re closer than ever to earning your Associate Degree or Certificate. Whether you’re preparing to transfer to a four-year university or stepping into the workforce with upgraded skills, this is an achievement to be proud of.

Learn the next steps to make it official and celebrate your success!

What are my next steps?

Graduation and commencement are related, but they are not the same process. This page helps you quickly determine what you need to do next — whether you are completing your degree or certificate requirements, planning to participate in the commencement ceremony, or both.

Most students need to take two separate actions:

Graduation is the official academic process that confirms you have met — or will meet — all requirements for your degree or certificate.

You must apply to graduate even if you do not plan to attend commencement.

Applying to graduate ensures:

  • Your degree or certificate is reviewed and awarded.

  • Your academic record is finalized.

  • Your credential is posted to your transcript.

Who should apply to graduate?

  • Students completing an associate degree.

  • Students completing a certificate.

  • Students planning to finish requirements in the current or upcoming term.

Commencement is the optional ceremony that celebrates your academic achievement. Participation is not automatic and requires a separate application.

Participating in commencement allows you to walk across the stage, be recognized with fellow graduates and celebrate your accomplishment with family and friends.

Important to know:

  • Registering for commencement does not award your degree.

  • You must still apply to graduate before registering for commencement.

  • You may be eligible to participate even if you are finishing final coursework.

Who should apply for commencement?

  • Students who want to attend the ceremony.

Not Sure What You Need to Do?

If you are:

  • Finishing classes this term

  • Unsure whether you already registered

  • Planning to walk but not sure if you are eligible

Start by reviewing both options above. Many students complete both steps.
