Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN)

Our Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program is a state-approved program that prepares you to apply for licensure as a vocational nurse, with three academic semesters of nursing theory and supervised clinical practice. This page walks you through what you need to get started: the entry requirements you must meet, how the application and selection process works, what the program costs, and where and when the program meets. Who can apply

  • Be 17 years of age or older.
  • Have a 12th-grade education or equivalent.
  • Complete the prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or better (there is no recency requirement):
    • ENGL 2 or ENGL 3 — Reading and Composition
    • BIOL 20 — Human Anatomy
    • BIOL 21 — Human Physiology
    • FN 2 — Basic Nutrition

There is no GPA threshold or entrance exam for the LVN program. Applicants who have failed more than once from any nursing program (LVN and/or RN) are not eligible to apply.

Considerations

All nursing programs require certain physical abilities and behaviors for successful completion. The LVN program is approved by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) and prepares you to take the NCLEX-PN examination to become a licensed vocational nurse.

How to apply

  1. Complete your prerequisite courses before applying.
  2. Complete a Butte College application if you are a new or returning student.
  3. Submit the LVN Application to the Nursing Office. Forms are posted about three months before each deadline.

How students are selected

If there are more qualified applicants than seats, students are chosen by a computer lottery.

Reapplication

Applicants who are not selected may reapply; the odds of admission increase with each consecutive reapplication.

Estimated cost

The estimated total program cost is approximately $6,400 — about $5,775 during the program (three semesters) plus about $650 in post-graduation licensure costs (BVNPT application and initial license, the NCLEX-PN exam, and Live Scan fingerprinting). Program costs include registration and fees, books, a medical skills kit, testing platforms (ATI and Kaplan), a physical, immunization tracking, two-tier TB testing, scrubs and shoes, background screening, and BLS/CPR certification. Costs are approximate and subject to change and do not include living expenses or transportation.

Where

The LVN program is held at the Glenn Center, 1366 Cortina Drive, Orland, CA. Clinical rotations take place at various locations in Butte, Glenn, and Tehama counties.

Time commitment

The program runs three academic semesters (16, 16, and 17 units) of nursing theory and supervised clinical practice. A new LVN class begins every Fall and Spring semester.
