Rising Scholars / Youth Justice

Students who have experienced the criminal justice system can face significant barriers to academic and career success. Rising Scholars welcomes all students, including those who are incarcerated, those who have experienced incarceration in the past, and those who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. The Butte College program for incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and system-impacted students is proud to be a part of the Rising Scholars Network.

The Rising Scholars Program supports formerly incarcerated and justice-impacted students as they pursue education, personal growth, and career pathways at Butte College.

If you identify as an ally and would like to support our students, donations help provide:

  • Emergency student support for barriers related to employment and reentry
  • Award and achievement celebrations
  • School supplies and student success resources

Every contribution helps create opportunities, reduce barriers, and support student success.

Youth Justice Initiative

The Butte College Rising Scholars Youth Justice Initiative is an investment in youth impacted by the juvenile justice system. The project serves youth who are currently detained or attending alternative schools, as well as youth who have been in contact with Juvenile Probation. The goal of the project is to offer these youth an opportunity to create solid pathways to higher education and careers, and thereby reduce recidivism, change students' lives, and strengthen the local community.

Upon enrolling at Butte College, students are supported as they participate in the college orientation process; apply for financial aid; connect with EOPS, TRIO, and DSPS as appropriate; create Education Plans; enroll in classes; and embark on their higher education journey. As part of their transition to college, students will be welcomed into the Rising Scholars student club and will receive all existing wrap-around supports provided by the program. Youth Justice Initiative students share a dedicated space with the Butte College Rising Scholars program.

This program is intended for Justice-Involved Youth. A Justice-Involved Youth is someone currently involved in, or previously involved in, the juvenile justice system. This may include being arrested, detained, placed in juvenile hall, or being on juvenile probation. It also includes young adults under the age of 26 who have been impacted by the juvenile justice system and have not been impacted by the adult carceral system.
