General Education Guides
General Education (GE) is a program of courses in the arts and sciences that provides a broad educational experience. Courses are usually introductory in nature and provide students with fundamental skills and knowledge in English, arts, humanities, mathematics, social sciences, physical sciences, and biological sciences.
Both Associate and Bachelor degrees require some amount of General Education. Each institution has its own requirements and these requirements can vary within the institution according to the major. For example, engineering and science majors may have less general education to complete at some universities. For students who are undecided about a major and undecided about a transfer school, the IGETC or the CSU General Education Pattern may be a good pattern with which to start. The General Education required for the Associate Degree is a separate pattern. There are many similarities and differences among each of these patterns.
General Education
This is the general education plan for those pursuing an Associate's degree at Butte College. This plan can be somewhat similar to, but less extensive than, the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CALGETC) plans. Every community college has its own general education.
Please note that this is not the degree for AA-Ts or AS-Ts at Butte College. For program specific information, please see Degrees and Programs
CalGETC is a new general education pattern that helps students at California community colleges transfer to either a CSU or UC. It will replace the older IGETC and CSU GE patterns for students who are working toward an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT).
If you’re planning to transfer to a CSU or UC, CalGETC makes things simpler by giving you one set of general education requirements that works for both systems. It includes courses in subjects like English, math, science, and social sciences that you need to take before transferring.
If you're unsure whether CalGETC applies to you or how to plan your classes, talk to a counselor—they can help make sure you're on the right track.
