Finding Opportunity Through Music

Kevin Vang’s Butte College Journey

After graduating high school during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kevin Vang wasn’t sure if college was the right next step for him. He decided to take a two-year break and started experimenting with music production software during that time. His developing passion for music prompted him to eventually enroll at Butte College and pursue a degree in music. Getting involved in the music program helped him refine his creative expression, while also bringing him community, support, and confidence in himself.

While he still enjoys producing music digitally, he has expanded his skills by learning guitar, piano, and singing. He credits the program’s professors and students for helping him grow both as a musician and as a person.

“Before coming to Butte, I always thought that college was not for me,” he said. “I wasn’t the kind of person to pursue something in education, because I was so done with high school. But being here has made me mature and realize that, it's not just education that you're really chasing here, it’s opportunity.”

Like many students, Vang faced obstacles during his college experience. Working full-time while attending school created pressure, forcing him to carefully balance financial stability with his academic and creative goals. Communication became one of the most important tools in overcoming those challenges. By staying honest with professors and family members about his commitments, Vang learned how to navigate competing responsibilities without giving up on his education.

One of Kevin’s favorite memories at Butte College was when he had the opportunity to work with fellow students in a pop band class, where they created an original rock-inspired song together. The group later traveled to California State University, Chico to professionally record the track, spending hours in the studio and strengthening friendships through music.

“We spent six hours there just having a blast and just smiling— it was smiles all around and super fun,” he said.

Looking ahead, Vang hopes to continue building both his relationships with his peers and his career while pursuing opportunities in the music industry. Although he is currently focused on achieving financial stability, he plans to keep developing his musical talents through collaboration, live performances, and songwriting.

One of the biggest lessons Vang learned during his time at Butte College is to take risks.

“Our professors have always said, if you're nervous, do it anyway. Do it scared because, at one point, you're going to have to do something in your life that you're completely terrified of,” he said. “Get out there and be better and just pursue your dreams.”
