Class of 2025 Graduate Success Story: Kai Bucholz

2025 Graduate and EOPS Director's Award Recipient

Kai Bucholz, a dedicated Studio Arts student at Butte College, has left a lasting impression on mentors, faculty, and peers alike. His academic journey is one marked by resilience, growth, and self-discovery.

As a former foster youth, Kai was an active member of the Inspiring Scholars and Extended Opportunity Programs (EOPS) on campus-programs that support foster youth and first-generation students, respectively. Initially introduced to Butte College through concurrent enrollment in high school, Kai faced early challenges and struggled academically during his first semester.

Through the support of the community and staff at Butte, Kai was able to get back on track. "I think that Butte College really prepared me to be the student that I always knew that I was," he shared. He discovered studio arts not just as a field of study, but as a meaningful path to express his creativity and identity.

This passion culminated in a leadership role in organizing the third annual Foster Care Museum at the Museum of Northern California Art, where Kai helped share stories of foster youth experiences through art.

In recognition of his hard work and leadership, Kai received the EOPS Directors Award, an honor that reflects his deep commitment to his community and academic goals. Looking ahead, Kai plans to transfer to California State University, Chico, to pursue a degree in communication design, and eventually hopes to earn an MFA from UC, Berkeley, with the ultimate dream of returning to Butte College to teach and inspire future students.

Kai's story is one of determination, artistry, and transformation-an inspiring example of what's possible with the right support and unwavering dedication.
