Class of 2025 Graduate Success Story: Tonika King

When Tonika arrived at Butte College, she was entering one of the most challenging chapters of her life. After selling her home in Arizona, she and her four children found themselves without a stable place to live. As a single mother seeking a fresh start, Tonika came to Butte fueled by determination but unsure of what the future held. What she discovered was a campus community that offered not only education but also life-changing support.

Tonika pursued a degree in criminal justice, driven by a lifelong interest in the field and encouraged by her late mother. "My mom always told me to go back to school and grow," Tonika said. "She believed in me, and I wanted to make her proud."

Her mother passed away just five days before Tonika graduated, but Tonika knows she was watching over her. "I could hear her voice saying, 'I'm proud of you.'"

College wasn't easy. Balancing school, parenting, and personal loss required deep strength and perseverance. Through it all, Tonika leaned on her faith, community, and the many resources Butte offers. The Roadrunner Hub helped her secure housing and provided food, gas cards, and support. CAS, EOPS, and various faculty mentors stepped up with encouragement and practical aid. "They didn't give up on me," she says. "They pushed me forward."

Tonika's professors and mentors empowered her to see her own potential. "I had to learn to trust that I could do it-to show up and put my best foot forward," she reflects. Her children, inspired by her dedication, now talk about their own futures in college.

Now housed, graduated, and looking toward a career in law enforcement, Tonika is proud of how far she's come-and excited for what's next.
