Class of 2025 Graduate Success Story: Jennifer Plasencia
Jennifer Plasencia, a public health science major at Butte College, wasn't always sure college was right for her. A first-generation student from Hamilton City, she originally planned to attend a four-year university, but financial realities made Butte the more practical choice. Seeking a true college experience, she opted for classes on the main campus rather than the Chico or Glenn County Centers, and ended up finding much more than she expected.
Early on, her journey took a difficult turn. During her first semester, Jennifer was in a serious car accident while managing a demanding course load in chemistry, physiology, math, and English. Without a car and unfamiliar with public transit, she considered dropping out. "I thought maybe college just wasn't for me," she remembers. But support from Butte's TRIO program, especially support from her advisor, Allison, helped her stay on course. "They reminded me I was still showing up, still trying, and that meant something."
Jennifer's passion for healthcare led her to pursue nursing. Thanks to Butte's Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, Jennifer earned her CNA license, leaving behind her fast-food job to work at a Chico nursing home while earning her associate degree.
On campus, Jennifer stays connected through programs like TRIO and Educational Talent Search. Her next step is to transfer to Chico State to complete her public health degree. She was selected to be this year's commencement speaker.
She addressed her fellow graduates with a heartfelt message about determination and family legacy. "When I first stepped foot onto this campus, I carried more than just books in my backpack. I carried my family's hopes, sacrifices, and dreams," she shared. "Dreams they didn't have the chance to pursue themselves."
Jennifer credits her parents' sacrifices for her success. "They gave up everything so I could have this chance," she says. "I just want to make them proud."
