serving students at Butte College, leaving an indelible mark on the
institution when he retired in December 2020. In recognition of his
unwavering commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive
educational environment for Butte College students, the NAACP Butte County Branch presented him with the
Excellence in Education Award at this year's Black and White Gala
and Awards Ceremony on October 14.
Renville's journey at Butte College began in 1976 when he was hired
as a career development and placement specialist. Despite his
initial interview being at another college, Renville chose Butte
College as his home.
Throughout his 44-year tenure at Butte College, he served in
various capacities, showcasing his dedication and commitment to
student success. His roles ranged from career development and
placement specialist to dean of matriculation services and vice
president for student services.
In his capacity as vice president for student services, Renville
oversaw numerous departments, programs and services aimed at
enhancing the student experience. Those programs ensured that
students had access to essential resources, a safe learning
experience and educational resources to guarantee their academic
success. He was instrumental in fostering an environment where
students could enjoy equal rights and thrive without fear of
discrimination. Renville's commitment to due process for students
in matters of conduct issues and grievances reflected his passion
for justice within the educational realm. He worked tirelessly to
ensure that every student had the opportunity to voice their
concerns and receive fair treatment.
Upon receiving news of the award, Renville expressed his gratitude,
saying, "I am honored to receive the Excellence in Education Award
from the NAACP Butte County."
"I was blessed to have served thousands of students throughout my
career," he continued. "Working with the staff and students at
Butte College, Chico State University, Chico State Unified School
District, and the communities of Butte and Glenn Counties for 44
years was a privilege."
