Butte's TRIO
Student Support Services (SSS) program has been helping students
succeed in college with resources and services that make a
difference. Despite a challenging launch during the pandemic, the
program steadily
recruited, welcomed, and served more than 100 students. The TRIO SSS program helps
low-income, first generation and disabled students succeed
and assists those with a goal to
transfer to a four-year college or university.
"TRIO students benefit from using our lab, meeting with coaches and
attending workshops and events. Being able to
connect with staff and peers has made a positive impact and helped
students be successful in college," said Butte College TRIO interim
director, Yolanda Salazar-Garcia.
TRIO students have access to a personal retention specialist who
provides one-on-one academic coaching sessions as well as other
activities hosted both in-person and virtually throughout the
academic year and summer. Events in 2020/21
included a TRIO program orientation;
Chico State tour; a Study Smarts-Life Coaching and Goal Setting
seminar series; a paint night on zoom; a trip to see the Broadway
musical "Hamilton"; Counseling & Advising workshop; Stress-Less
craft workshop; and many in-person social events. TRIO students
also have access to a computer lab and gathering space on the main
campus in SAS-258.
Timmy, a current Butte College TRIO student, adds
"TRIO helped me stay on track with my education and provided me
with a much-needed lifeline for my college education. TRIO means
that I have been able to make friends and be successful at Butte
College."
The program is currently accepting applications to fill
approximately 100 openings. For more information or to join the
