Phi Theta Kappa

PTK (Phi Theta Kappa) is the International Honor Society for two-year colleges and the Butte College Honor Society. We put Honors in Action through our research projects, community service, leadership development activities, and serving the campus. All students are welcome to join our team, where we can grow together as service leaders. To be a full member of PTK you must join the PTK national honors society.

How to become a member

To become an official member of this International Honor Society (not required), one must complete a minimum of 12 units at Butte College with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3. Official members are eligible to apply to over $36 million in transfer scholarships to baccalaureate institutions throughout the United States. Each term an email will be sent to students who qualify for PTK with information on how to join. Students are not required to join the Butte's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, but those who wish to develop their leadership skills, participate in fellowship activities with members throughout the country, engage in scholarly pursuits beyond the classroom, and/or involve themselves in campus and community service activities are advised to consider fully joining and running for an officer position.

PTK Membership Scholarship

The PTK Membership Scholarship can help pay the $90 one-time membership fee for eligible students.

The application opens for the fall term on September 1 and closes on October 1 and opens February 1 closing on March 15 for the spring term. Students who are unable to pay the membership fee are encouraged to apply using this scholarship application link on this page. PTK and the Butte College Faculty Education Association currently sponsor these scholarships.

Students in select Butte College support programs may also be eligible to have the one time fee covered, including Rising Scholars, Inspiring Scholars, MESA, and EOPS. See your program advisor for more information.

Meetings, Teacher of the Year Voting, Officer Elections

-PTK meetings are held on the second and last Tuesday of each month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Chico Center, CHC 116. Food will normally be provided. Fall Meeting Dates: 8/25, 9/8, 9/29, 10/6, 10/27, 11/10, 11/24, 12/8. Spring Meeting Dates: 1/26, 2/9, 2/23, 3/9, 4/13, 4/27, 5/11, 5/25.

The first 40 minutes are open to all students. The final 20 minutes are reserved for the officer meeting.

Bylaws, Induction Ceremony

-The Beta Theta Kappa Chapter bylaws outline the chapter’s structure, officer roles, membership guidelines, and operating procedures. Students can review the bylaws to learn how the chapter is governed and how members support Phi Theta Kappa’s mission at Butte College.

-Induction Ceremony, 3/30 in Chico Center Student Lounge from 5:30-6:30pm is a pinning ceremony of a white PTK rose along with short presentations and an oath taken by all inductees. Each member can bring up to two guests and food will be provided. The ceremony is one hour in length. RSVP opens 2/15 and closes 3/15.
