You Need to Know!

SEVIS Responsibilities and Maintaining a Valid F-1 Status

There are responsibilities and regulations that are required of an F-1 international student. It is your responsibility to know and follow the legal requirements to keep you “in status”. If you have any questions about your immigration status please meet with Rachel Wood the campus Designated School Official (DSO).

Validity of Immigration Documents – Passport, Visa, I-94 and I-20
The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) requires students to report to the International Student Program any changes and updates to personal (address within 10 days of moving) and academic events (major).

Full-Time Attendance
You are required to maintain full-time status while studying in the United States. At Butte College, full-time attendance means you must enroll and complete a minimum of 12 units each semester (Fall & Spring). You are not required to enroll in classes during the summer or winter sessions. If you are forced to withdraw from a class or if you take less than 12 units you must first meet with your academic counselor and receive final approval PRIOR to dropping/withdrawing from classes.

Employment is limited to 20 hours per week during a semester. Students can search for on-campus job opportunities on Handshake or by visiting the Career Center in the Student Services building, room 258.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Students who have completed their academic program are permitted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to apply for temporary employment (1 year) that is directly related to the  F-1 student's major area of study. Please review the presentation about OPT and the OPT Request Form before you schedule an appointment with your advisor to discuss your options.
