AJLE Short Courses

This course is the first of two modules that comprise the minimum training standard for California peace officers as specified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.). Graduates of this course qualify for minimal peace officer powers as defined by the California Penal Code. This module contains instruction in 12 specific classroom subjects related to the authority and limitations of arrest. Additionally, students will participate in 10 hours of hands-on training in arrest, control, and searching techniques. Pass/No Pass only.

Graduates of this course qualify for minimal peace officer powers as defined by the California Penal Code. This module includes 8 hours of classroom instruction in firearms safety, psychological and physiological responses, current firearms law, firearms cleaning techniques, and moral and ethical considerations. Additionally, students will participate in 16 hours of hands-on training in drawing and holstering, loading and unloading, and basic handgun shooting principles. Pass/No Pass only.

Becoming a public safety dispatcher means choosing dispatching not only as a career, but as an ethical commitment to maintain public trust. Public safety dispatchers must understand their role and responsibilities, understand the operation of the communications center, and act with a high degree of professionalism and ethics. This course will cover the communication process of dispatching, criminal justice system, laws and the California Penal Codes, communication technology operations, resource referral services, and wellness management. This course meets the minimum requirements for certification by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Pass/No Pass only.

This course provides valuable skills for all instructors of California law enforcement including in-service and public safety dispatch training. Students will gain facilitation skills and an understanding of how to employ adult learning methodologies appropriate for various law enforcement topics. This course meets the basic instructional skills training requirement to teach in the POST Regular Basic Course and for the Academy Instructor Certificate Program. This class is also designed as the first level of the POST Instructor Development Institute (IDI) and is a requirement of those wishing to progress through the IDI program. Pass/No Pass only.

As a supplement to the basic field training officer course, Field Training Officers appointed on or before January 1, 2017, are required to receive eight (8) hours of additional crisis intervention behavioral health training. Field Training Officers appointed after January 1, 2017, are required to complete this training within 180 days of the assignment. Field Training Officers who have completed a 40-hour crisis intervention behavioral health training course are exempt from the above requirement. This course includes topics of understanding and reducing stigma; understanding the cause and nature of, and having the ability to distinguish between, mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and substance use disorders; developing the appropriate language usage for interacting with distressed persons; understanding appropriate responses in handing various situations involving distressed persons; and becoming familiar with conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques. Additionally, the course will provide the trainee with the minimum topics mandated by Senate Bill 29 and California Penal Code Section 1315.28(a)(1).  POST Credit Only

The 8-hour and 4-hour Perishable Skills courses are designed to meet or exceed POST Perishable Skills.

Program Category II requirements for driver training and awareness. Both courses include behind-the wheel training on the EVOC track and skidpan. POST Credit Only
