Russ Critchfield
Head Basketball Coach

Coach Russ Critchfield enters his 10th season at the helm of the 2007-2008 Butte College Roadrunners with high hopes for an outstanding season. This year's squad has the capability to perform at a high level against a very challenging schedule. The “Roadrunners” will be trying to get to the top of the Golden Valley Conference and into “post-season play” once again! With a strong returning veteran group who finished 4-1 in the last half of conference last season, and a talented contingent of freshmen and one 4-year college transfer, the “Roadrunners” are poised for a successful 2007-2008 campaign! Coach Critchfield, with an overall career record of 258-215, also has a wealth of experience at the four–year level where he served 18 years as an assistant basketball coach at the Division I level. Stints at San Diego State University, University of California at Berkeley, Saint Mary's College, and the University of Washington prepared him for the journey as a head coach. While in that capacity, he had the good fortune to recruit and or coach 6 NBA players and over 25 players drafted into the NBA! As a head high school coach his teams recorded an overall 148-82 mark, winning one championship, and playing in several post-season. As a former player Coach Critchfield earned All-American honors at the University of California at Berkeley, played for the ABA Champion Oakland Oaks in 1969, was elected to the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995, and was recently inducted into the Pac-10 Basketball Hall of Honor. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of California, Berkeley, and his Master of Arts Degree in Physical Education at Saint Mary's College. He makes his home in Chico with his lovely wife Susan.Their family includes, Kyle Critchfield of Pasadena,Cathy Bull of San Francisco, Jim and Susanne Bull of South Lake Tahoe and grandchildren Spencer (7), Josh (5), and Kaylee (3).


Josh Holbrook
Assistant Basketball Coach

Coach Holbrook enters his first season as an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Butte College. Born and raised in Oroville, Coach Holbrook graduated from Las Plumas High School in 1996. An outstanding shooter, he played four years in high school followed by two seasons at Butte College where he played for Coach Critchfield during the 1999 season. Coach Holbrook started his coaching career in 2001 as an assistant JV Coach at Oroville High School. Following his coaching stint at Oroville High School he successfully coached the 7th and 8th grade boy's teams at Marsh Junior High School in Chico from 2002 through 2007. Last year, while coaching at Marsh Junior High School he also coached the Las Plumas High School Freshman Boys to an outstanding 19-6 record. During the springs and summers Coach Holbrook has continued to have success coaching local AAU basketball teams. He has coached the very successful Chico Golden Bears the past few seasons. Many of his players are currently playing successfully for local high school programs. Coach Holbrook is an outstanding young coach who brings energy, passion and a strong basketball background to the Roadrunner staff and program.       

Coach Holbrook transferred to Chico State University from Butte College in 2004. Presently, after a brief hiatus from his education, he plans to resume classes there in the spring of 08' looking to earn his degree in Social Science. His immediate family resides in Oroville and includes his mother Dawn, father Kip, and three brothers and three sisters.


 

 

Marcus Dorin
Strength and Conditioning Coach

Marcus Dorin is entering his second season as the Roadrunners Strength and Conditioning Coach. An enthusiastic, tireless worker, and expert in his field, Coach Dorin does an excellent job with our “hoopsters” building player strength, speed, quickness, and confidence specific to basketball performance. He received his Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree from Chico State University. In addition to his basketball duties, Coach Dorin is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Level 1 Club Coach in weight-lifting, and an Associate Faculty member at Butte College in the Physical Education Department. Coach Dorin resides in Chico with his wife Bethany and son Ezra (1).


John Soldate
Athletic Academic Counselor

A truly successful sports program emphasizes, and holds as one of its highest priorities, quality education for its student-athletes. At Butte College, this is the case.

The athletic department and student services have joined together to provide support programs aimed at achieving excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.

The Athletic Academic Advising program, headed by full time advisor John Soldate, offers counseling and guidance in: orientation, educational planning, COA and NCAA eligibility issues, athletic issues, and personal concerns. In collaboration with the Center for Academic Success, student-athletes also have access to a special on-campus tutoring program along with a monitored study hall program.

John's full-time caseload is specifically for Butte College student-athletes. He is a member of the Counseling Department, but his office is located in the Butte Athletic Department. This is a unique arrangement aimed at securing the best interests of the student-athlete while insuring proper communication with the coaching staff.

John has been working with college student-athletes for the past nine years, starting his career at Butte College as an instructor and coach. John most recently comes from The University of Southern California were he was an assistant athletic director of student-athlete academic services working within that athletic department in various roles including counseling and advising. As a college student-athlete John played baseball at Santa Rosa J.C., Chico State , and went on to play professionally. John graduated from Chico State and went on to receive a master's degree in exercise science also from CSU Chico. He also has a master's degree in education with an emphasis in counseling and student services from USC. John is a member of the 3C4A (Community College Counselors Athletic Academic Advisors Association) and the N4A (the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics).

John Soldate is a big part of Butte College 's effort to care for its athletes off the field, as well as on.
