Butte College Drama Department Presents "Spring Awakening"

Spring Awakening

8-time Tony-winning Rock Musical SPRING AWAKENING Comes to Life at Butte College, November 12–20

What happens when 1891 German teenagers in strict town aren’t given the basic information of the facts of life? Broadway’s smash hit rock musical, “Spring Awakening,” explores this confusing time of life for young people in this cutting edge theatrical piece that launched the careers of Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff of TV’s “Glee.”

“Spring Awakening” is recommended for mature audiences and opens Saturday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m., with performances continuing Sunday, November 13 at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m. and closing Sunday, November 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors/students. Tickets are available at the door or via: http://www.ButteDrama.com. Performances take place at the Butte College Black Box Theatre, ARTS Building, 3536 Butte Campus Drive, Oroville, CA 95965.

"Spring Awakening" debuted on Broadway in December of 2006, playing until January 2009, and was recently revived on Broadway by Deaf West Theatre in 2015. The musical is based on the banned German play of the same title, written in 1891 by Frank Wedekind. The play was banned in Germany over a hundred years ago because of its frank and adult themes. From the publishers, Music Theatre International: "The winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, told by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater through what Entertainment Weekly called, 'the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade,' Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. The landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock and roll that is exhilarating audiences across the nation like no other musical in years."

“Spring Awakening” was created by Steven Sater (Book & Lyrics) and Duncan Sheik (Music), based on the play by Frank Wedekind. Butte College’s production features a set designed by Robert Pickering, lighting designed by Michael Johnson, costumes by Aliya Randel, choreography by Melinda Buzan, musical direction by Tamara Allspaugh, stage manager is Matthew Dick, and is directed by Butte’s Theatre Arts Instructor, Jesse Merz.
