(Not Eligible for Financial Aid) The Allied Health Certificate is designed to prepare students to enter the healthcare field. The curriculum is designed as an introduction to careers in healthcare. It will also provide an understanding of medical terminology, and issues affecting public health and our society. In addition, the certificate provides curriculum on "soft skills" in healthcare, for example communication and professionalism. Upon completion of this certificate, students may be able to obtain an entry level position in the healthcare industry as well as submitting the certificate of completion to healthcare programs as part of their application process.

This course presents an overview of the disciplines of community and public health. Topics include the basic concepts and terminologies of public health; an overview of various public health professions and organizations; the study, prevention and control of disease in the community; the analysis of the social determinants of health; strategies for eliminating disease, illness and health disparities among various populations; community organizing and health promotion programming; school health promotion; environmental health and safety; and an overview of the healthcare delivery system in the United States. Emphasis will be placed on the development of knowledge and preliminary skills to serve as an effective advocate for community and public health. (C-ID PH 101).

The Critical Six Soft Skills in the Professional Healthcare Environment

This course assists in the development of soft skills in the professional healthcare settings. Soft skills can be defined as a cluster of personality traits and behaviors that enhance the relationship between two individuals or an individual and an organization. Proficiency in the practice of soft skills has been identified as an essential characteristic to attain for any individual involved in the professional healthcare setting. Content will include six competency domains which include: Communication, Workplace Ethics and Professionalism, Team Building and Collaboration, Effective Problem Solving, Embracing Diversity and Demonstrating Compassion. Graded only.

This course explores the specialized language used within the medical profession. Emphasis is placed on the definition, pronunciation and spelling of medical terms with focus on building medical words using prefixes, word roots, suffixes and combining forms. To further advance a working knowledge of these terms, vocabulary is taught in relation to the basic anatomy, physiology and pathology of body systems.
