Course Description: This course continues to expand upon culture and facilitate language acquisition through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will interact with more sophisticated authentic language in context. Content continues to expand in order to express more complex ideas in order to express personal meaning and to apply different strategies and techniques to go beyond causal conversation and express opinions, make suggestions on familiar topics, as well as some abstract issues and plans. Students demonstrate an increased awareness of cultural norms, values, and culturally relevant appropriate customs and events. Accuracy becomes quite high for high frequency structures and vocabulary but more complex discourse is still developing and requires a somewhat sympathetic listener or reader. Students will continue to demonstrate the ability to think critically by analyzing linguistic structures and reflecting on and making cross-cultural comparisons. This course will primarily be taught in Spanish. (C-ID SPAN 210).
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Communicate with increasing ease and confidence when dealing with everyday routine tasks and participate in conversations requiring an exchange of basic information related to common topics, such as work or school, or their personal interests.
- Demonstrate a deeper knowledge and understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and identify the places where Spanish is spoken.
- Analyze and discuss short stories and poems from some of the most well-known Spanish/Latino writers.
- Analyze and discuss short films from different Spanish-speaking countries, displaying various dialects and varieties of the Spanish language; demonstrate the cultural knowledge necessary to understand the context and background of the films.
- Analyze linguistic structures and reflect on and make cross-cultural comparisons.
- Speak Spanish at the high intermediate level.
- Write Spanish at the high intermediate level.
- Read Spanish at the high intermediate level.
- Listen and comprehend Spanish at the high intermediate level.
- Compare and contrast cultural nuances of the Hispanic/Latino world.

- Read and be prepared to discuss the characters and main themes of a short story by Isabel Allende selected by the instructor.
- Read and be prepared to discuss the characters and main themes of the novel Marianela by Benito Galdós.
Writing Assignments
- Write a 4-page essay in Spanish on the cultural influences of the indigenous populations in Mexico on modern Mexican culture and society.
- Write 3-5 pages in Spanish, developing the topic of a sustainable future in Latin America while referencing several obstacles different countries face due to pollution, poverty, and violence within an unsteady infrastructure.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Watch and report on a political/social topic as presented on the news (such as on Univision or CNN en español).
- Interview someone from a Spanish-speaking country and present your findings in class.
