Course Description: This introductory course teaches beginning language acquisition in a cultural context through listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students will interact with authentic language in cultural context. (C-ID SPAN 100).

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. recognize and begin to imitate Spanish pronunciation
2. comprehend basic Spanish at the introductory level
3. speak basic Spanish at the introductory level
4. write basic Spanish at the introductory level
5. formulate an argument supporting the importance of second language acquisition
6. appraise elements of Hispanic cultures including the nuances of everyday life
7. communicate in a variety of everyday life situations such as greeting and expressing leave-taking; expressing likes and dislikes; obtaining information about people, places, and things; describing self, family, and friends; express feelings; stating future plans; shopping; talking about daily routines; interacting in a basic phone conversation; ordering in a restaurant in a culturally appropriate way; and planning for a trip
8. express some commands by understanding the importance of formality when talking to strangers

Reading Assignments

1. Study the lyrics of a song presented by the instructor. Working in groups, first identify the words/expressions both of you do not understand. Through the use of collaboration and internet resources, research the meaning of the unknown expressions in the song and their significance to the story the song tells. As part of an open-class discussion about the meaning and cultural significance of the song, each group should be prepared to share what they understood from the reading and share their opinions about the message of the song.
2. Read a small paragraph in Spanish about various sports and recreational activities in a particular region of Latin America (e.g., the popularity of baseball in Venezuela). Then describe to a partner what you learned and share what activities/sports/pastimes you are interested in, using as much Spanish as possible.

Writing Assignments

1. Write a 25-word diary entry in Spanish about some of your daily habits. Use complete sentences and the correct conjugations of the present indicative.
2. Write a 25-word email in Spanish to a friend. List what classes you are taking and specify what days you have each class and what time they start. Additionally, mention which class is your favorite and why.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Prepare an original skit based on a communicative context found in course materials. Perform the skit in class.
2. Select one of the Spanish-speaking countries covered in the text, and do some additional research to gain more knowledge about the cultural customs of the population in that country. Be prepared to share your findings during a class discussion.
