Course Description: This course provides an opportunity for students enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program to develop skills in leading and managing patient care and prepare for passage of the licensure examination. Content includes presentation of the registered nurse's role in planning, organizing, staffing and directing safe patient-centered care. Professional and social issues in leadership and management will also be discussed. Graded only.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Describe concepts of the integrated roles of leading, managing, and following within the nursing staff role.
- Utilize knowledge of legal issues, ethical principles, and organizational structure in effective patient advocacy.
- Apply effective communication, conflict resultion, change managment, and leadership skills to promote collaborative interdisciplinary patient centered care.
- Identify nursing interventions necessary to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Demonstrate proficiency in personal professional career management.
- Describe the scope of practice for the registered nurse in California.
- Utilize the skills in the adopted and integrated review program for licensure examination.

- Write a final cover letter and resume prepared for a potential employer using lecture materials, feedback received on your drafts, and the grading rubric.
- Complete the Leadership Management Style Self-Assessment, considering information from the lecture on leading and managing.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Complete and remediate at least five tests to evaluate content area that needs improvement for licensure exam success.
- Attend examination and review course offered by adopted and integrated review program for licensure examination success.
