Course Description: This course utilizes the conceptual framework of the nursing curriculum to provide the foundation for nursing practice. Common threads integrated throughout the program are nursing process, nutrition, medication administration, cultural diversity, communication and professional roles. Topics include an introduction to nursing care, legal and ethical aspects, therapeutic communication, and concepts underlying current professional practice. This course provides a foundation to prepare the student to use critical thinking and the nursing process in providing direct patient care. Graded only.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Identify principles of effective communication that demonstrate caring, sensitivity, and cultural awareness for clients in maternal-newborn settings and with reproductive system disorders.
2. Describe the nursing and medical management for clients with reproductive system disorders.
3. Categorize principles of assessment based on functional health patterns for clients in maternal-newborn settings and with reproductive system disorders.
4. Utilize critical decision-making skills to discuss the health care for clients in maternal-newborn settings and with reproductive system disorders.
5. Describe caring interventions for clients in maternal-newborn settings and with reproductive system disorders.
6. List and describe principles of teaching and learning for clients in maternal-newborn settings and with reproductive system disorders.
7. Describe the nursing and medical management for clients with low risk pregnancy, and labor, and delivery.
8. Describe the nursing and medical management for clients with high risk pregnancy, and labor, and delivery.
9. Describe nursing care and medical management for the low and high risk newborn.
10. Explain cultural care considerations for clients in the maternal-newborn setting, and with reproductive disorders.

2. Read the degrees of episiotomies and/or lacerations in your textbook and relate the information to a patient you have cared for.

2. Complete the Labor and Delivery worksheet using your textbook and other sources for reference during clinical.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Review the Pitocin Induction/Augmentation drip rate calculation. Be prepared to discuss in class.
2. Wear the "Empathy Belly" for 4 hours and be prepared to discuss your experience in class.
