Course Description: This course provides an overview of the role of a nurse manager/supervisor and leader in a structured setting. The focus is on the development of the basic skills that facilitate the management process. Career opportunities, employer/employee relationships and responsibilities, as well as professional expectations are explored. This course will also provide an overview of nursing history, theory, legal and ethical concerns, and scope of practice of the LVN. Graded only.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Explore the role/defining characteristics of a leader and a manager.
2. Apply principles of decision making/critical thinking, delegation, and time management.
3. Apply principles regarding conflict resolution, change, feedback and evaluation with employees.
4. Describe the principles of Total Quality Management.
5. Analyze health care delivery, structure, budget, and reimbursement.
6. Describe and apply job seeking skills.
7. Explore key elements of nursing history, theory, and trends in nursing.
8. Compare and contrast legal concepts in nursing.
9. Debate and apply the principles of ethics in nursing.
10. Describe the scope of practice for the Licensed Vocational Nurse.

Reading Assignments

1. Read chapter 12 from Ellis on leadership qualities and challenges. Be prepared to discuss in class. Follow with student self-assessment of leadership styles.
2. Read Chapter 7 from Ellis on ethical and legal issues. Come to class with an example of an ethical conflict and be prepared to discuss both sides of the issue in small groups, then share conclusions in class for general discussion.

Writing Assignments

1. Go online to the "BVNPT" and look up answers to numerous scope of practice and legal responsibility questions, turn in written assignment answering these questions. Be prepared to discuss implications of these regulations in class.
2. Complete written homework regarding regulation of healthcare, concepts of quality management and quality control in healthcare facilities.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Find a leader in your community and interview them using provided format and questions. Write a paper covering the results of the interview, and discuss the leaders's leadership style, leadership strengths and weaknesses.
2. Using guidelines and examples given in class and on Canvas, create a personal resume to be handed in for critique, returned and then used in a class activity where students formally interview each other.
