Course Description: This course focuses on developing therapeutic communication skills in all aspects of nursing care. Nursing process as it applies to interpersonal communication and personality development theory will be integrated throughout course. Graded only.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Describe the process and techniques of basic interpersonal communication.
  2. Identify three personality development theories and discuss how they effect the communication process.
  3. Utilize the nursing process in communicating with hospitalized clients.

Examples of Assignments

Reading Assignments

  1. Read the chapter on therapeutic interactions in your textbook. Come to class prepared to discuss therapeutic interactions with hospitalized patients.
  2. Read the chapter on stress disorders in your textbook. Come to class prepared to discuss these theories.

Writing Assignments

  1. Complete the case study on role development handed out in class. Identify and develop to nursing diagnoses with independent and dependent interventions.
  2. Given a set of patient assessment data, organize the data in a body systems format, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and functional health patterns. Using information from class analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each of these formats applied to hospitalized patients.

Out-of-Class Assignments

  1. Therapeutic Communication: Process Recording. Using the handout from class write down verbatim a communication session with a client. Using information from class, analyze each of your communications.
  2. Complete the Holmes and Rahe Social Readjustment rating scale.
