Course Description: This course consists of individualized study of the appropriate techniques and repertoire for the specific instrument or voice being studied through private instruction. The emphasis is on the progressive development of skills needed for solo performance. Achievement is evaluated through a juried performance. This course may be repeated 3 times to meet the requirements of the AA-T in Music. (C-ID MUS 160).
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Play or sing with precise rhythm.
- Play or sing the correct pitches with accurate intonation.
- Play or sing with the articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and expression appropriate to the literature being studied, and if singing, diction appropriate to texts of the literature.
- Play or sing in a stylistically appropriate manner suitable to the genre, period, and style of the literature.
- Perform improvised solos as applicable.
- Demonstrate appropriate of blend and balance when performing with an accompanist.
- Memorize performance literature when appropriate to the performance medium and artistic tradition.
- For vocal students only: Solos in a minimum of three languages selected from English, Italian, German, French is expected.

- Grading will be based on lessons, performances, and a final juried performance examination. Individual performance exam (before a jury of music faculty).

- Read a biography book on an artist who plays your instrument. Take notes of valuable techniques and philosophies for discussion with instructor.

- Read the provided article on memorization. Write a 1,500-word essay on the methods and techniques you studied and how to apply them in practice.
- Study the musical approach of one artist in your genre/instrumental field. Write a 1,500-word essay on your findings including details of the artist's education, performance history, and philosophy.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Practice the lesson material and log your practice hours.
- Observe a solo performance of your instrument and be prepared to discuss your observations with your instructor.
