Course Description: This course is the second half of intermediate Japanese, which further develops language skills: reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking. Through continued study of Japanese language and culture students further increase their fluency and grammatical accuracy in the four skill areas in expanded written analysis and discussion of both modern and classical Japanese texts.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. pronounce Japanese correctly with increased ease and clarity
2. comprehend intermediate-level Japanese with increased facility
3. speak with greater proficiency in Japanese at the intermediate level
4. write Japanese with greater grammatical accuracy at the intermediate level
5. formulate arguments supporting the importance of second language acquisition
6. describe elements of Japanese culture

Reading Assignments

1. Read and be prepared to discuss the speech style differences between a polite conversation and a conversation with honorific expressions and humble expressions.
2. Read about Japanese annual events on a website, and research about a specific event for its cultural significance, history, and current practice.  Discuss what you learned with a partner in class.

Writing Assignments

1. Write a three-page research paper on one aspect of Japanese POP culture, such as Anime, J-POP, or Japanese films.
2. Extract dialogues from a media content, such as Japanese anime or drama, and compare and analyze the speech styles with honorific expressions and humble expressions. Write a two-page paper explaining the results of your analysis.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Find a Japanese related YouTube channel. Summarize the characteristics of the YouTube channel and introduce it to the class.
2. Choose a Japanese topic (e.g., Japanese cooking) and after researching the topic, prepare a presentation and video clip to present in class. While presenting the researched information, include various key facts and examples to explain the topic.
