  2. Read the "Briefing on Media Law" section of the Associated Press Stylebook. Be prepared to summarize and lead the class through an analysis of a student-produced college paper for adequate compliance with media law.

Writing Assignments

  1. Write a 200-750 word, publishable-quality story based on a press release handed out by your instructor, using AP-style requirements and the inverted pyramid.
  2. Write a 300-500 word, publishable-quality review that satisfies the genre criteria discussed in class, using AP-style requirements.

Out-of-Class Assignments

  1. Prepare an interview arc list of questions on a topic relevant to college students and conduct an interview with at least five students. Take notes during the interview, including correct spelling of preferred name and preferred pronoun. Compile interview information into a publishable-quality, 300-750 word article, using AP-style requirements.
  2. Visit a local business and show samples of the print publication, then pitch an ad for the paper by discussing the audience, circulation statistics, and ad sizes/costs options. If interested, have the client sign the contract and make payment; if the owner is not interested in purchasing an ad, request permission to drop off free copies to be made available to customers.
