Course Description: This course is the second half of beginning German, which further develops language skills: reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking. In addition, this course continues to introduce students to aspects of Germanic culture. Students who have completed at least two, but fewer than three years of high school German (or equivalent) with a letter grade of "A" or "B" within one year of the present date, should register for Third Semester German.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- improve the clarity of pronunciation in German
- comprehend basic German
- use both written and oral German for communication in everyday situations
- formulate arguments supporting the importance of second language acquisition
- appraise elements of Germanic culture

Examples of Assignments
Reading Assignments
- Read instructions in plain statement form and change them into a politer way to ask for something in the informal and formal form. Discuss your changes with a partner in class.
- Read a short story in German three times. The first reading is for a basic understanding. The second reading is to analyze and interpret grammar and vocabulary. The final reading is to further strengthen comprehension. Discuss your understanding of the story with a partner in class.
Writing Assignments
- Rewrite a half-page recipe from standard sentences to a typical recipe/instruction form. Make sure that you include all measurements with German measurements.
- Watch an episode of our weekly German sitcom and answer one page of questions about the events and characters (e.g. who/where/when/why).
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Attend Stammtisch or another event that deals with German-speaking culture, or research a video about something typical to the German-speaking culture. Then write a half-page summary describing either the event you attended or the cultural aspect you researched.
- Prepare an original skit based on a communicative context found in course materials. Perform the skit in class.
