Course Description: This course is a study of beginning German emphasizing grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension. It also introduces the student to various aspects of German culture. Students who have completed at least one, but fewer than two years of high school German (or equivalent)with a letter grade of "A" or "B"" within one year of the present date, should register for Second Semester German.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- recognize and begin to imitate German pronunciation
- comprehend basic German at the introductory level
- speak basic German at the introductory level
- write basic German at the introductory level
- formulate arguments supporting the importance of second language acquisition
- describe elements of Germanic culture

Examples of Assignments
Reading Assignments
- Read a diagram with statistics about recreational activities of German youth and describe the information to a partner in class.
- Read a letter containing an introduction of a new student. Then be able to respond to the information by providing the same introductory information about yourself.
Writing Assignments
- Write a 50-word paper about three places in a German-speaking city that either attracted your attention or that you did not care for.
- Write a 50-word paper about different typical German products from a video. Tell us whether you would like to try them or not.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Attend Stammtisch or another event that deals with German-speaking culture, or research a video about something typical to the German-speaking culture. Then write a half-page summary describing either the event you attended or the cultural aspect you researched.
- Prepare an original skit based on a communicative context found in course materials. Perform the skit in class.
