Course Description: In this course, students will develop and demonstrate fundamental hairstyling and haircutting skills. Emphasis is placed on State Board standards in client draping, shampooing and conditioning, fundamentals of hair design, and basic haircutting and basic hairstyling techniques. Students will practice and demonstrate State Board disinfection and sanitation techniques for beauty professionals while servicing the public. This course is designed toward preparation for the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology exam and is a fundamental course in the Cosmetology, Barbering or Hairstyling program sequences.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Explain the five principles of hair design and recognize their specific contribution to a hairstyle.
  2. Identify the seven different facial shapes and design a beneficial hairstyle for each.
  3. Describe the influence of hair types and texture on design.
  4. Identify resources of hair design and inspiration.
  5. Demonstrate design considerations for masculine hairstyling.
  6. Demonstrate a habit and consistent practice of disinfection and sanitation standards set by the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

  1. Read Chapter 12: Hairstyling in the course textbook. Be prepared to discuss in class.
  2. Read Chapter 11: Haircutting in the course textbook. Be prepared to discuss in class.

Writing Assignments

  1. Complete written answers to review questions given at the end of the chapter on Hairstyling in the textbook. Be prepared for chapter quiz.
  2. Review hairstyling video on styling technique and write a brief summary of the processes and procedures followed in the video. Be prepared for practical assessment on hairstyling and design development.

Out-of-Class Assignments

  1. Select 3-5 different personal care products (e.g. five different shampoos) and design an evaluation instrument for the products. Conduct an experiment to compare the performance of each product and summarize your findings in a data table or chart.
  2. Review (instructor approved) professional video on highlighting and write a brief summary of one's understanding of the process and procedure and how it aligns or differs from the approach taught in class.
