Course Description: This course will teach procedural application of standard health, safety, and sanitation practices in Cosmetology, Barbering, Manicuring, Hairstyling and Esthetics. Emphasis will be placed on the practice of Disinfection and Health standards required by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology for practice and licensing in the beauty industry. Students will practice and demonstrate State Board disinfection and sanitation for beauty professionals while servicing the public. This course is designed toward preparation for the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology exam.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Develop and demonstrate appropriate consultation techniques while using correct safety procedures and utilizing the needs assessment.
  2. Demonstrate a habit and consistent practice of disinfection and sanitation standards set by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
  3. Demonstrate protocols and processes involved in salon health safety and sanitation practices.
  4. Identify inspection protocols for the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

  • Update cleaning logbooks as per state regulations for all working areas in the salon setting  
  • Know how to handle client injury caused by slips and falls

  • Understand and know when to use eyewash equipment 
  • Understand how to safely handle burn incidents (client-care and self-care)

  1. Develop a material data and safety notebook listing cosmetic supplies used in the salon workplace.
  2. Write an essay highlighting expectations of safe and sanitary practices of a salon owner/entrepreneur highlighted by Tabatha Coffey's "Own-It"
