Course Description: This course continues to teach language acquisition in a cultural context through listening, speaking, reading and writing at the second semester level. The students will continue to interact with authentic language within culturally rich contexts. Equivalent to 2 years of high school instruction. (C-ID SPAN 110).

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Compare and contrast the nuances of everyday life in the Hispanic world with those of the English speaking in the U.S.
2. Communicate orally and in writing in a variety of meaningful real life activities moving toward the intermediate high level of proficiency on the national ACTFL scale (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages).
3. Narrate and describe past real-life events from several perspectives.
4. Compare and contrast common Hispanic hobbies and favorite pastimes with non-Hispanic ones.
5. Use and apply acquired culturally appropriate communicative skills, such as: preparing and extending invitations; asking for and giving directions; comparing and contrasting common hobbies and pastimes in Hispanic and non-Hispanic cultures; talking about health issues, such as accidents and stressful events; using appropriate inflections; comparing and contrasting different types of relationships in Hispanic and non-Hispanic cultures; influencing friends and others; and expressing personal attitudes towards events using the subjunctive.
6. Use the subjunctive to influence others by understanding cultural approaches to commands.

Reading Assignments

1. Read the text provided about Guatemala and the influence of indigenous cultures in Guatemalan society. Then write a 1-page journal entry in Spanish about the parts that most interest you.
2. Read the short article with new vocabulary about hobbies and healthy living practices. Then be prepared to speak in Spanish in a small group about what hobbies and/or healthy practices you participate in.

Writing Assignments

1. Write a 250-word description in Spanish about your plans for the summer. Write 10 sentences and include a different verb in each.
2. Write a 250-word message in Spanish to a friend describing the classes you took last semester. Use both past tenses (i.e., the preterite and the imperfect).

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Prepare an oral presentation about a cultural topic, exploring some of the main cultural, social, and historical events of the Hispanic world, and how they increase awareness of the U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities.
2. Prepare an original skit with a partner based on the communicative context of two roommates communicating what they want each other to do. Develop several informal commands (both negative and affirmative) using different verbs to tell your partner what you want him/her to do and not do in the skit, which will be performed in class.
