Course Description: This course provides directed clinical experiences in acute hospitals and agencies that provide services for maternity, pediatric, perioperative and medical/surgical clients. Through the use of the nursing process, the student will provide care, teaching, support, and rehabilitation to for maternity, pediatric, perioperative and medical/surgical clients. Emphasis will be upon the role of the registered nurse in caring for clients with acute and chronic problems, prevention of complications related to maternity, pediatric, perioperative and medical/surgical clients, and client education. Pass/No Pass only.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Apply standards of professional practice in the clinical setting.
- Plan effective therapeutic communication demonstrating caring, sensitivity, and cultural awareness.
- Utilize assessment techniques in the collection, analysis and synthesis of relevant client data.
- Apply critical thinking skills in the decision making process in order to plan individualized client care.
- Provide direct client care based on the nursing process.
- Formulate teaching/learning plans in the clinical setting.
- Collaborate with the members of the healthcare team.
- Choose effective management techniques through planning, organizing, and directing client care.

Reading Assignments
- Read the chapters on the operating room in the med-surg textbook, using this information to identify the different roles of the staff in the operating room. Discuss the responsibilities of each of these roles during the patient's peri-operative experience.
- Read chapter on the oncology patient in the med-surg textbook. Develop a plan of care to manage major side effects of chemotherapeutic agents for the oncology patient during an acute care hospitalization.
Writing Assignments
- After the two-day rotation in the operating room/PACU, write an APA fomat paper discussing: roles of medical personnel in the OR/PACU, describe a surgery/procedure you observed, identify 3 emergencies that can occur in PACU, and list two ways to maintain a sterile field.
- Attend your assigned Childbirth Preparation class. Write an APA paper discussing the content of the class.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Attend the OB simulation experience in the high fidelity simulation lab. Be prepared to discuss your experience in class.
- Perform 5 pediatric assessments in the simulation lab and complete the associated worksheets.
