Course Description: This course applies theory from NSG 1, NSG 2, NSG 3, and NSG 4 to the hospitalized client utilizing clinical experience in hospitals to provide services to adult clients. Emphasis will be placed upon the role of the registered nurse in delivery of basic bedside care, medication administration, and applying the nursing process to delivery of safe care. Pass/No Pass only.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Apply the standards of professional practice, including legal, ethical and regulatory framework to the delivery of basic nursing care.
  2. Demonstrate basic therapeutic communication.
  3. Perform basic health assessment.
  4. Apply the steps of the nursing process to delivery of care.
  5. Identify the client’s values, customs, and cultural habits that affect delivery of care.
  6. Collaborate with the members of the healthcare team.
  7. Discuss cost efficient strategies to delivery nursing care.
  8. Demonstrate use of technology in the healthcare environment.

Reading Assignments

  1. Read the chapters on the operating room in the med-surg textbook, using this information to identify the different roles of the staff in the operating room. Discuss the responsibilities of each of these roles during the patient's peri-operative experience.
  2. Read chapter on the oncology patient in the med-surg textbook. Develop a plan of care to manage major side effects of chemotherapeutic agents for the oncology patient during an acute care hospitalization.

Writing Assignments

  1. After the two-day rotation in the operating room/PACU, write a 2 page APA fomat paper discussing: roles of medical personnel in the OR/PACU, describe a surgery/procedure you observed, identify 3 emergencies that can occur in PACU, and list two ways to maintain a sterile field.
  2. After attending med/surg clinical write a 2 page paper on lessons learned during your first experience in nursing clinical.
