Course Description: This course assists the LVN in acquiring nursing skills and processes necessary for functioning in the of an associate degree-nursing program. Course content emphasizes medical/surgical knowledge, competencies and skills essential for successful performance in the LVN’s advanced placement of the ADN program. The course content will focus on competencies expected of the graduate ADN. Graded only.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Apply psychomotor skills to complete RN level nursing procedures including intravenous medication and skills covered in the two semesters (except Pharmacology I) of the accelerated ADN program.
- Demonstrate a complete RN level nursing assessment with correct documentation.
- Apply critical thinking skills and behaviors while participating in high fidelity simulation.

- In the medical surgical text, read the chapter on fluid and electrolyte balance. Come to class prepared to discuss the reading.
- Read the chapter on diabetes management in the medical surgical text. Answer an instructor prepared set of objectives covering the material.
Writing Assignments
- Complete the case study on a patient with gastrointestinal disorder. Utilize the nursing care plan presented in class to complete the case study.
- Select a nursing journal article discussing current evidence based practice guidelines for a medical surgical disorder discussed in class. Write a critical appraisal of the article and how to effectively implement guidelines into their role as a professional registered nurse.
