Course Description: This course builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in NSG 127. The course expands the students' understanding of the registered nurse’s role as part of the healthcare team. Course content emphasizes medical/surgical knowledge, competencies and skills essential for successful performance in the LVN’s advanced placement of the ADN program. There will also be review of OB and Peds content to ensure preparation and success in the ADN program. Clinical application of the registered nurse’s role will be incorporated within the simulation and skills lab environment. Graded only.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Compose patient specific care plans utilizing the nursing process.
- Compare and contrast the legal/ethical role and competencies for LVN and RN roles.
- Review and prepare for a complete RN level nursing assessment with correct documentation.
- Apply critical thinking skills and behaviors during class discussions and case studies.
- Interpret nursing care/nursing process as it applies to diverse cultures.
- Utilize critical thinking to apply the nursing process to different clinical situations.
- Demonstrate and apply dimensional analysis math computations as they apply to administration of medications.

Reading Assignments
- Read the chapter regarding LPN to RN transitions on role development and transition. Be prepared to discuss the content of the readings.
- Read the article "LPN to RN: A win-win situation for nursing education" from Teaching & Learning in Nursing. Be prepared to discuss the content of the reading.
Writing Assignments
- Demonstrate the ability to accurately synthesize a given set of clinical data by writing a coherent client specific nursing care plan that identifies measurable clinical outcomes for the client and be prepared to discuss the care plan developed.
- Using the text and class lectures, write a critical appraisal of "student success at the associate degree nursing level" and be prepared to discuss the critical appraisal written.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Complete an instructor generated set of questions to demonstrate mastery of nursing drug math using dimensional analysis.
- Develop mastery in new skills learned in class, practice nursing assessment skills. Be prepared to demonstrate mastery during skill testing at the end of the course.
