Course Description: This course is a continuation of hospital clinical experience with a concentration on adult Medical-Surgical Nursing. Pass/No Pass only.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Provide client's basic needs for personal hygiene, comfort, and safety in the setting of a therapeutic environment, while observing patient's rights.
- Perform nursing procedures required to meet the client's basic needs.
- Assess, plan, implement, and record patient care.
- Administer medications safely.
- Follow legal standards of practice.
- Instruct the client regarding health maintenance.
- Consistently maintain principles of infection control in the clinical setting.
- Present and maintain a professional demeanor.
- Utilize basic communication skills to work effectively with health team members to provide individualized and culturally appropriate nursing care.
- Maintain client confidentiality according to HIPAA and institutional regulations.
- Assume leadership roles in the clinical setting.

Reading Assignments
- Read the medical-surgical textbook to research disease processes, pathology, treatment, and nursing care to facilitate better understanding of care for specific clients in the clinical setting. Be prepared to discuss this topic in post-conference.
- Review OB/Pediatric textbook prior to your rotation to better understand disease processes and nursing care of pediatric and obstetric clients while considering the developmental and cultural factors. Be prepared to discuss these topics in post-conference.
Writing Assignments
- Complete leadership worksheets after performing each of the three roles in the leadership team. Be prepared to discuss this at clinical post-conference.
- Complete a pediatric journal reflecting on observational experiences after each day of clinical experiences in a pediatric setting. Be prepared to discuss this in small groups at post conference.
