Course Description: This course is a study of the fundamental concepts of pharmacology, with a focus on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and related nursing implications for the major drug classes. Nursing process and cultural implications will be discussed for the basic drug classifications. Topics Include Drugs Affecting the Respiratory System, Anti-Infective and Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Immune and Chemotherapy Drugs, Drugs Affecting the Gastrointestinal Tract & Nutrition, Dermatologic, Ophthalmic, and Otic Drugs, Coagulation Modifier and Diuretic Drugs. Graded only.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Identify the standards of professional practice, including legal, ethical and regulatory framework for administration of medications.
2. Demonstrate therapeutic communication.
3. Perform assessments related to medication administration.
4. Apply the steps of nursing process in delivery of medications.
5. Identify the client’s values, customs, and cultural habits that affect medication compliance.
6. Identify patient education strategies related to medication therapy.
7. Explore cost efficient strategies in the delivery of nursing care related to medication therapy.

Reading Assignments

1. Read the chapter in the textbook about pain management, opioid drugs and drug tolerance.  Answer the questions in the back of the chapter and be prepared to discuss these answers.
2. Read the chapter in the textbook about adrenergic, adrenergic blocking, cholinergic and cholinergic blocking drugs.  Be prepared to discuss these drugs.

Writing Assignments

1. Read the chapter in the textbook on beta-blockers and then create a 2 page worksheet about beta-blockers including:  mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, adverse effects and managing an overdose and be prepared to discuss the worksheet.
2. Watch the assigned video on the respiratory system and define the function of the cilia and the alveloi and write a 2 page paper reflecting the information presented in the video.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Read the chapters in the textbook about respiratory medications. Complete the provided charts on antihistamines, decongestants, and antitussive medications and be prepared to apply the information learned to a case study.
2. Watch the assigned video on anti-infectives and draw a diagram that represents the medications in the video.  Include action and side effects of these medications and be prepared to apply the information to a case study.
