Course Description: This course provides an opportunity for students enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program to develop skills in leading and managing patient care and prepare for passage of the licensure examination. Content includes presentation of the registered nurse's role in planning, organizing, staffing and directing safe patient-centered care. Professional and social issues in leadership and management will also be discussed. Graded only.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. This course provides an opportunity for students enrolled in the ADN program to develop skills in leading and managing patient care and to be exposed to leadership and management functions in nursing.
2. Leadership components and management functions will be applied to varying groups of clients and families within a variety of healthcare settings.
3. Safe and effective patient-centered care is emphasized.
4. Cultural diversity in clients and co-workers is discussed.
5. The importance of consumer relationships is recognized. The value of effective communication, collaboration, and team building is reinforced. Quality improvement and the rapid rate of change in healthcare are discussed with an emphasis on ways to stay abreast of changes and how to be a part of the changes.
6. Implementation of evidence-based practice is discussed.
7. The use of information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making is reinforced. Professional and social issues in leadership and management will also be discussed.

Reading Assignments

1. Read the Chapter in your textbook on Leadership Styles and be prepared to discuss these styles.
2. Read the Chapter in your textbook about communication types and styles including verbal and non-verbal communication. Be prepared to apply this information during class during mock interviews.

Writing Assignments

1. Write a one-page cover letter and a one to two page resume and share it with five peers using lecture materials and feedback received on your drafts, and the grading rubric and be prepared to discuss points learned.
2. Complete the three page Leadership Management Style Self-Assessment, considering information from the lecture on leading and managing and be prepared to participate in a discussion on your leadership style.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Complete and remediate at least five tests to evaluate the content areas that needs improvement for licensure exam success.
2. Attend examination and review course offered by adopted and integrated review program for licensure examination success.
