Course Description: This course provides directed clinical experience in acute hospitals and agencies that provide services for mental health and medical/surgical clients. Through the use of the nursing process, the student will provide care, teaching, support, and rehabilitation for mental health and medical/surgical clients. Emphasis will be upon the role of the registered nurse in caring for clients with acute and chronic problems, prevention of complications related to mental health and medical/surgical clients, and client education. Observation and participation in a variety of community mental health settings allows the student to use the theory in supervised practice. Pass/No Pass only.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Apply standards of professional practice in the clinical setting.
  2. Plan effective therapeutic communication demonstrating caring, sensitivity, and cultural awareness
  3. Utilize assessment techniques in the collection, analysis and synthesis of relevant client data.
  4. Apply critical thinking skills in the decision making process in order to plan individualized client care.
  5. Provide direct client care based on the nursing process.
  6. Formulate teaching/learning plans in the clinical setting.
  7. Collaborate with the members of the healthcare team.
  8. Provide care within legal requirements and ethical guidelines.

Reading Assignments

  1. After completion of the a med/surg clinical experience, read a nursing journal research article and write a critical appraisal of the article and compare the article to their clinical experience.
  2. Read the chapter on communication techniques in your mental health nursing textbook. Describe therapeutic and non-therapeutic verbal communication techniques. Be prepared to discuss in small groups in class.

Writing Assignments

  1. Spend one day of clinical rotation in the medical-surgical area collecting data for the "Critical Thinking Exercise." Use data collected to write a critical appraisal and demonstrate understanding of key theoretical concepts addressed in Med/Surg or Mental Health theory courses.
  2. Complete two reflective (self-assessment) writings during the mental health rotation. Submit your writings by the assigned dates. Use these reflections to improve your patient interactions during clinical.

Out-of-Class Assignments

  1. Research and prepare clinical packet analyzing laboratory test results in relation to the patient and medications.
  2. Prepare nursing diagnosis statements for one of the patients being cared for in clinical along with interventions with rationale and goal.
