Course Description: This course provides directed clinical experience in acute hospitals and agencies that provide services for maternity and pediatric clients. Through the use of the nursing process, the student will provide care, teaching, support, and rehabilitation for maternity and pediatric clients. Emphasis will be upon the role of the registered nurse in caring for obstetric and pediatric clients and prevention of complications related to maternity, pediatric clients, and client education. Pass/No Pass only.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Formulate a nursing diagnosis according to NANDA criteria based on information gathered from a variety of sources related to the client's biopsychosocial aspects.
2. Utilize nursing knowledge and assessment skills to recognize related cues and define real and potential nursing diagnoses for adult clients.
3. Utilize nursing knowledge including human sexuality, pharmacology, nutrition, and cultural diversity in the nursing process to plan and prioritize for clients nursing diagnosis, developmental level, and ability to adapt to his/her environment.
4. Provide individualized nursing case based upon the nursing diagnosis, health status, developmental level, and ability to adapt to the environment according to standards of practice, policy, and in collaboration with other appropriate health care professionals.
5. Evaluate care based upon outcome criteria and implements appropriate modifications of nursing care based upon ongoing assessment of the client, family, or group.
6. Demonstrate the ability to communicate verbally, non-verbally, and in writing with clients, families, groups, agencies, health providers to provide care supportive of maintaining wellness, promoting adaptation, and/or providing care or services to the elderly and/or disabled.
7. Manage individualized care for a group of clients utilizing available resources appropriately and supervising care providers according to agency policy and legal requirements.
8. Initiate and participate in the referral and utilization of community agencies and resources to assist clients, families, and groups.
9. Develop, implement, and evaluate formal and informal teaching of clients, families, groups, and care providers to provide prevention, support, and promotion of adaptation of elderly/disabled.
10. Provide care within legal requirements and ethical guidelines

Reading Assignments

1. Read the chapters on the newborn assessment and be prepared to administer that assessment during clinical.
2. Read chapter on the Pediatric Growth and Development and be prepared to evaluate pediatrics level in clinical.

Writing Assignments

1. After attending the daycare clinical, write an APA paper discussing different ages of engagement and any abnormalities seen.
2. Attend your assigned Childbirth Preparation class. Write a 2-3 page APA paper discussing the content of the class.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Attend the OB simulation experience in the high fidelity simulation lab. Be prepared to discuss your experience in class.
2. Perform 5 pediatric assessments in the simulation lab and complete the associated worksheets.
