Course Description: This course provides the Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) the knowledge and skills needed to function in an acute care setting. Topics include Scope of Practice guidelines, effective communication, and proper procedures for care of patients with a variety of conditions in the acute care setting. Students will learn about common acute and chronic conditions that require hospitalization and surgical procedures that patients undergo in the acute care setting. Graded only.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

Describe the limitations of the acute care nurse assistant with respect to the Scope of Practice guidelines.
Practice effective communication and documentation skills in the acute care setting.
Describe knowledge and understanding of a safe and secure environment for patients in the acute care setting.
Demonstrate and practice safe and effective care of the surgical patient.
Collaborate with nursing staff to formulate an appropriate plan of care for the patient with disorders in the major body systems.
Identify and follow proper procedures for providing appropriate care for the orthopedic, oncology, pediatric and/or terminal patient.

Examples of Assignments

Reading Assignments

Read the chapter in your textbook regarding "Emergency Situations." Be prepared to discuss in small groups the various emergency situations and how to handle them.
Read a professional article on post-operative care of the surgical patient. Be prepared to discuss in class.

Writing Assignments

Write a 2-page paper documenting your care of a patient in the clinical setting.
Write a 2-page paper on a specific surgical procedure and the care the CNA must provide to that patient.

Out-of-Class Assignments

Working in a group, prepare an oral presentation to present in class on a common pediatric disorder and the care the CNA should provide.
Interview a patient in the clinical setting about their perception of the care they received from the nursing staff. Be prepared to present in class.
