Course Description: This course is an introduction to music teaching. Topics covered include pedagogical methods, classroom management, lesson planning, and potential career options in music education, including TK-12 and private teaching. Students will develop their own philosophy of music education through readings, observations, and guided teaching. In addition to class time, the course requires 17 hours of structured fieldwork in music education settings in cooperation with carefully selected and campus-approved teachers.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Discuss and critique traditional and innovative approaches to music teaching and learning.
2. Articulate and discuss issues related to music learning and teaching in schools, communities, online, and hybrid spaces.
3. Design learning experiences that are relevant to students' interests and connected to their prior experiences.
4. Articulate, describe, and critique the philosophical, psychological, sociological, and musical underpinnings of music learning and teaching experiences.
5. Articulate a personal philosophy of music education.

Reading Assignments

1. Read the chapter on challenges in music education, which delves into various issues affecting music education, such as funding constraints, inclusivity, evolving curricula, technology, and assessment. Your task is to read the article, take notes on key challenges, and reflect on their implications for your future role as a music educator. Additionally, propose one potential solution to address a specific challenge discussed in the article in a 1-2 page reflection paper. This assignment aims to deepen your understanding of the complexities in music education and encourage critical thinking about solutions to these challenges.
2. After reading the article on music teacher preparation, reflect on your own preparation. What do you need to do to put yourself in the best position possible to be a successful music teach, both from a practical standpoint and a philosophical standpoint? Be prepared to share in class.

Writing Assignments

1. In this assignment, you are tasked with crafting a concise yet comprehensive personal philosophy of music education. Drawing from your insights gained in this course, reflect on your beliefs regarding the purpose of music education, the role of the music educator, and your approach to teaching music. In a 1-2 page paper, articulate your convictions, values, and aspirations as a future music educator.
2. Write a sample lesson plan (1-2 pages) for a lesson in your chosen music education setting. Follow the format discussed in class.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Observe a music education setting of your choice and take detailed notes on teaching methods, student engagement, materials used, classroom management, and interactions. After the observation, write a brief reflection (500-1000 words) addressing the effectiveness of teaching strategies, classroom management, and any unique approaches you observed.
2. Design a music lesson on a topic of your choice for a music education setting of your choice. Your lesson plan should include clear objectives, engaging activities, assessment methods, and materials/resources needed. After teaching the lesson, write a brief reflection (500-1000 words) on how your lesson went, what successes you had, any challenges you encountered, and what you would do differently next time.
