Course Description: This course is for the study, rehearsal, and public performance of literature appropriate to the ensemble, with an emphasis on the development of skills needed to perform within a large ensemble. Different literature will be studied each semester. Choice of ensemble is based on each student's identified major instrument or voice. This course may be repeated 3 times to meet the requirements of the AA-T in Music. (C-ID MUS 180).

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Play or sing in time with section and ensemble as directed.
  2. Play or sing the correct pitches as indicated with accurate intonation.
  3. Play or sing with the articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and expression as directed.
  4. Play or sing appropriately with the ensemble.
  5. Play or sing stylistically appropriately to the period/style of the composition.
  6. Perform improvised solos as applicable.
  7. Demonstrate appropriate blend and balance within the ensemble and/or the section.
  8. Memorize performance repertoire as directed.
  9. Adhere to professional level ensemble performance and rehearsal standards of conduct.

Reading Assignments

  1. Read through the scores of the assigned music in preparation for rehearsal.
  2. Research and read about the composer of each composition being rehearsed and performed. Be prepared to discuss your findings with the class.

  1. Write the appropriate technical direction in your score that you will need for performance.
  2. Complete and respond to the instrumental intonation tendency chart.
