Course Description: An intermediate-level piano course, open to both music and non-music majors. This course continues instruction in advancing keyboard skills, including piano technique, major and minor scales and arpeggios, sight-reading, expanded keyboard harmony, and transposition skills through intermediate piano repertoire. (C-ID MUS 172).
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate facility in keyboard technique and exercises.
- Demonstrate the ability to harmonize and transpose melodies using common chord progression.
- Play all major and minor scales and arpeggios in two octaves.
- Interpret intermediate-level piano music from Baroque to the 21st century.

Reading Assignments
- Read the chapter on practicing in "On Piano Playing," by Gyorgy Sandor, and be prepared to discuss in class.
- Read about Gerald Moore in the Oxford Encyclopedia of Music, and be prepared to discuss his importance and contributions to the art of accompanying.
Writing Assignments
- Write the fingering you would use into the score of Beethoven's "Fur Elise".
- Attend a concert where the piano is the main, or featured, instrument and write a 2-page paper detailing your experience.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Practice technical exercises regularly.
- Get together with a student in a vocal class and practice accompanying them in their songs.
